Neutron diffraction experiments have been carried out to characterize the magnetic structures and order parameters in an intermediate phase of NdB$$_4$$ showing the successive phase transitions at $$T_{rm 0} = 17.2$$ K, $$T_{rm N1} = 7.0$$ K, and $$T_{rm N2} = 4.8$$ K. The observed patterns in phase II ($$T_{rm N1} < T < T_{rm 0}$$) are successfully explained by postulating a planar structure with static magnetic moments in the tetragonal $$ab$$-plane. We have found that the magnetic structure in phase II can be uniquely determined to be a linear combination of noncolinear "all-in/all-out"-type and "vortex"-type antiferromagnetic structures. We propose that the quadrupolar interaction holds the key to stabilizing the noncollinear magnetic structure and quadrupolar order. Here, the frustration in the Shastry - Sutherland lattice would play an essential role in suppressing the dominance of the magnetic interaction.

Magnetic structure of NdPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ has been studied by means of neutron powder diffraction. We observed remarkable magnetic reflections with the modulation vector $$q$$= (1/2 0 0) below the ordering temperature $$T_{rm N}$$ = 1.2 K. We found a collinear magnetic structure of Nd moment of 2.9(1) $${mu}_{rm B}$$ at 0.3 K parallel to the $$c$$-axis, where the ferromagnetically ordered $$a$$ planes stack with four Nd layer period of ++-- sequence along the $$a$$ direction with the distance between adjuscent Nd layers to be $$a/2$$. This is very similar to CePd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ with $$q$$ = (0.23 0.23 0) and the Ce moment parallel to the $$c$$-axis. These structures with in-plane modulation $$q_{|}$$ is a consequence of the two dimensional nature of fermi surface topology in this family, coming from unique crystal structure with very long tetragonal unit cell and large distance $$>$$ 7${AA}$ between the rare earth layers separated by Al and two Pd layers.

A-Type antiferromagnetic ordering and the transition of the 5$$f$$ electronic state accompanied by unusual moment reorientation in NpRhGa$$_5$$

Jonen, Shintaro; Metoki, Naoto; Honda, Fuminori; Kaneko, Koji; Yamamoto, Etsuji; Haga, Yoshinori; Aoki, Dai*; Homma, Yoshiya*; Shiokawa, Yoshinobu; Onuki, Yoshichika

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 75(Suppl.), p.41 - 43, 2006/08

Elastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out in order to reveal the magnetic structure and 5f electronic state of NpRhGa$$_5$$. This material exhibits two successive antiferromagnetic transition at T$$_{N1}$$ = 36 K and T$$_{N2}$$ = 33 K, respectively. A-type antiferromagnetic structure with the propagation vector q = (0 0 1/2) has been revealed below T$$_{N1}$$. We found a remarkable change in the moment direction, namely the Np moment is parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis for T$$_{N2}$$ $$<$$ T $$<$$ T$$_{N1}$$ and T $$<$$ T$$_{N2}$$, respectively. The magnetic moment exhibits a remarkable jump at T$$_{N2}$$, indicating that the moment reorientation is associated with the change of 5f electronic state. The observed magnetic form factor indicates the dominant contribution of the orbital moment and revealed an itinerant character of the 5f electrons.

The magnetic structure of NpRhGa$$_5$$ has been investigated by neutron scattering. NpRhGa$$_5$$ exhibits two antiferromagnetic phases with transition temperatures at T$$_{N1}$$ = 36 K and T$$_{N2}$$ = 33 K. Neutron scattering experiments revealed an antiferromagnetic structure with propagation vector q = (0 0 1/2) for both, where the Np magnetic moments are oriented parallel to the c-axis for T$$_{N2}$$ $$<$$ T $$<$$ T$$_{N1}$$ and parallel to the [110] direction on basal plane for T $$<$$ T$$_{N2}$$. At T$$_{N2}$$ the reorientation of magnetic moments is accompanied by a sudden increase of magnetic moments, indicative of the first order transition. The magnetic form factor revealed a dominant contribution of the orbital moments.

We have succeeded to grow a single crystal of uranium ternary intermetallic compound UPdGa$$_5$$ by the Ga self-flux method. The magnetic susceptibility showed a weak temperature dependence and small anisotropy, consistent with an itinerant character of 5$$f$$ electrons. We observed a clear drop in the susceptibility and electrical resistivity below the Neel temperature $$T_N$$= 31 K. The magnetic structure was studied by means of a neutron diffraction measurement. We observed an antiferromagnetic peak with the propagation vector $$Q$$=[0,0,1/2]. The uranium 5$$f$$ moment of 0.33$$mu$$$$_{B}$$ parallel to the $$c$$-axis was found to order ferromagnetically in the basal $$c$$-plane and coupled antiferromagnetically along the $$c$$-axis.

Detailed magnetic structure of spin-density waves (SDWs) in epitaxial Cr(001)/Sn multilayer was investigated by neutron scattering combined with M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopic studies. Monatomic Sn layers were embedded in 240 nm thick Cr(001) films with varying the periodic spacing from 4.2 to 16.2 nm. All samples were revealed to be a commensurate antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase at 300 K. The CAF structures changed to incommensurate SDW states with complex waveforms whose wavelength are controlled by the artificial periodicity at low temperatures although the CAF structure in the sample with the period of 4.2 nm persisted even at 10 K. The phase transition depends on the thickness of the Cr layers intervening between Sn monatomic layers. An appreciable phase slip in the SDW was observed during the phase transition in the sample with the period of 10.2 nm. The SDW structure is discussed by taking account of the competing forces between the nesting of Fermi surface and a pinning of antinodes at the Sn monatomic layers.

Addendum to $lqlq Doping-Dependent Magnetic Structure of Tb$_{1-x}$$Ca$$_{x}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ rqrq

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 72(5), P. 1312, 2003/05

In order to investigate interrelation between the lattice structure and the magnetic structure, we have performed Rietveld structural analysis on the neutron powder patterns for Tb$$_{1-x}$$Ca$$_{x}$$MnO$$_3$$ at low temperature. In the concentration range of $$0.65 leq x leq 0.85$$, we observed the Bragg reflections due to the CE-like- and C-type structures. In this range, the powder patterns were reproduce by the two-phase model with $$Pnma$$ and $$P2_{1}/m$$ symmetries. The fractions of these phases change against concentration $$x$$. This variation of the fraction for the $$Pnma$$ phase is similar to the variation of the integrated intensities of the CE-like-type magnetic Bragg reflections. This indicates that the $$Pnma$$ phase is responsible for the CE-like spin-ordering. Furthermore, we discussed interrelation between the detailed lattice structure and magnetic structure.
